How to Start Your Artistic Side Hustle in 2025
As an artist, I know what it’s like to have that niggling feeling inside.
The one where your heart is whispering to you to finally start your artistic side hustle and start making some extra money from something that brings you so much joy.
But I also know how overwhelming it can seem and how complicated we can feel getting started actually is.
The good news is.. It doesn’t have to be either of those things. There is a path that allows you to get your business started with the least amount of resistance possible, and I want to break it down for you.
🏠 Step 1 | Start Where You Are
When you’re thinking of getting started, it can feel like you need all your ducks in a row to get going. I hear people always saying “I just need to know what I’m doing” or “I just need to be further along” to start.
But the thing is, where you are now is a perfect place to begin. Because, what you decide to make and sell now doesn’t need to be the thing you need to make and sell forever.
Finding one thing you’re good at, learning to market it and making money off it is about being okay with starting exactly where you are and knowing that it will evolve and change as you do.
Building a side business is so much finding the courage to take the first step, even if it doesn’t all make perfect sense to you right away. That’s actually the normal way to start. That’s how most people do it.
📝 Step 2 | Stress Free Setup
This part can be the most overwhelming, but there’s actually a simple step by step to follow that will help you weed out the things you DO need from the things you DON’T.
Legals
First, you’re going to need to register your business. This will be different wherever you are in the world, but google will tell you exactly where to do it.
You’ll also need to pick your name - which is seriously the best bit!
Shop
Next, it’s time to create your shop website. I recommend using a user friendly website like Squarespace. All of my students receive a done for you template when they sign up to Become an Artist from Home - it looks super professional and really easy to manage!
✨ Step 3 | Simple Marketing Strategy
The world of marketing can be so overwhelming, but everything I teach is about debunking the myth that marketing is too hard to do it yourself.
I recommend choosing one social media platform to get started. My preference is instagram as I find it’s a platform that works really well for artists to be found on and to showcase their work. Pair this with a simple email marketing strategy and you’re good to go!
💞 Step 4 | Lean on Community
So, you’ve gotten started, your business is set up and you’re getting eyes on your work…it feels like all the hard stuff is over, right?
Learning to run a business can be really tricky. There’s highs and lows, wins and losses and many days you’ll probably want to throw it all in the bin.
Which is why having a community of like minded people going through the same thing as you is SO important.
You can reach out to local groups or connect with people on social media, but doing this with other people makes the process so much better.
We have an incredible community of artists in Become an Artist from Home – it’s honestly the best part of my job watching them all be there for one another and form the very best of friendships!
Starting your artistic side hustle in 2025 doesn’t have to be complicated and it’s definitely not about having all the answers. It’s about taking that first step, deciding now is the time and trusting that you’ll figure the rest out along the way!
